My husband and I put a 2 day 1 night cruise, when collected from our hotel, we were "upgraded" for Silversea. Train journey back from Halong took 3.5 hours and was ridiculously cramped and uncomfortable. We had to stop half way for the rest, which is good but we stopped at a remarkable place which seemed to be a tourist supermarket custom built, sold all things tourism normal but higher than the rest of the ridiculously overpriced (4/5 times the price of Vietnam). Expected in Halong Bay are beneficiaries, with the bay was undoubtedly beautiful, but it was damaged by the construction site and hoards of coach and shipped thousands to hundreds of ships boat left the bay each day. The ship is fine and rare room and well equipped. The package all kinds of drinks, and the drinks are crazy prices. 30/40/50 dollars for a bottle of wine, beer 3 times the price of the mainland, water and coffee after dinner - everything must be paid for. It's hard to put into words how bad the food is, thinking about it now still makes me feel uncomfortable (which I have been for a few days after the journey). We have served a lot of food is not necessary, being cooked. The worst food I've eaten in my entire 2 weeks in Vietnam, most of which are not edible.
The staff and guides are good - though perhaps pushed a bit too much drink (can they commission). The staff did try and ensure that they gave everyone the best experience possible and it is with regret that I have written such a poor evaluation. I feel that a lot of the reviews I have read for places in Vietnam are based on the people, rather than a true reflection of the place / experience / standard / equality etc. Service is an important factor important but not everything.
This journey is not worth the money - and I would not recommend Halong Bay as one trip - there are so many more wonderful sites on offer in Vietnam.Read more »
