Corneal Edema – Market Outlook, Epidemiology, Competitive Landscape, and Market Forecast Report – 2023 To 2033 thelansis.com
The cornea is a clear, transparent, dome-shaped structure covering the eye’s anterior portion. In adults, the cornea is approximately 0.5 millimeters thick and consists of five major layers:
1. The epithelium (the outermost layer with regenerative capacity)
2. Bowman’s membrane (a tough, protective layer)
3. The stroma (the thickest layer containing collagen fibrils)
4. Descemet’s membrane (a thin layer)
5. The endothelium (a single-cell-thick innermost layer)
Due to the high density of nerve endings, the cornea is susceptible. Corneal edema is caused by dehydration, viral infections, endothelial disorders, ocular surgery, traumatic injury, increased intraocular pressure, and, occasionally, toxins. Endothelial Fuchs’ dystrophy is the most prevalent cause of corneal edema. This hereditary disorder is characterized by the progressive loss of endothelial cells, with women at a higher risk than men. Herpes virus infections induce inflammatory responses in the cornea, leading to corneal edema. Corneal edema can also develop immediately or years after ocular surgery, resulting from endothelial layer impairment by ultrasound radiation, damage to Descemet’s membrane, or the infusion of toxic medications into the cornea. Additionally, potent topical and systemic medications can cause corneal edema. The initial symptoms of corneal edema include:
• Distorted or blurred vision
• Halos around lights
• Eye discomfort
• Photophobia (increased sensitivity to light)
• Sensitivity to foreign particles
Due to corneal nerve damage, these symptoms may progress to severe ocular pain. Pseudophakic bullous keratopathy (PBK), characterized by forming fluid-filled bullae or blisters, is commonly observed following cataract surgery. The treatment of corneal edema varies depending on the underlying cause. Proper contact lens use is recommended for edema caused by ill-fitting or overused contact lenses. Edema resulting from increased intraocular pressure is managed by reducing the pressure. Post-surgical corneal edema can be alleviated with eye drops prescribed by an ophthalmologist. Infection-related corneal edema is treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory eye drops. In mild cases, where swelling is confined to the epithelial layer, a hypertonic saline solution (e.g., Muro 128 drops or ointment) is used to draw excess fluid from the cornea via osmosis. In severe cases, a corneal transplant (either full or partial thickness) may be necessary.
